Nocturne - Rêveries: Virgil Soleil CS (SSSM)
Nocturne was founded in 1994 by Saphi in France. It started primarily in noise and dark ambient territories, later evolving toward more electronic textures, rhythmic structures, and melodic elements—particularly after Cécile F. became involved around 2006. Over more than 30 years, Saphi has remained the central figure, consistently exploring themes rooted in French industrial culture. The project delves into post-industrial alienation, mechanized labor, mental oppression, and societal critique.
Nocturne draws from classic industrial influences, featuring dense drones, distorted factory and field recordings, delayed synths, and rhythmic/noise assaults. The sound shifts between harsh, confrontational attacks and hypnotic, psychedelic, or electronic passages. Recurring themes include post-industrial despair, mechanical repetition, psychological entrapment (with nods to concepts like Stockholm syndrome or "Arbeit macht frei"), and critiques of modern labor and society. Releases are often conceptual, sometimes serving as soundtracks for performances, and incorporate elements of martial industrial, death industrial, and neo-folk at times. The music is highly experimental and immersive, evoking the shadowy underbelly of contemporary existence.
